Outline of content – Edexcel Specification

Content has been updated to reflect the advanced information on topics.

Day 1: Session 1
Fundamental skills and knowledge, without the aid of a calculator!

This session will look at important knowledge from Number, from the four operations and fractions, to factors, multiples and primes.

Day 1: Session 2
Can you apply ratio and proportion to real life?

This session will look at the importance of ratio and proportion, applying them to real-life contexts and other situations, including compound units and percentages.

Day 2: Sessions 1 and 2
All things algebraic!

These sessions will take a long, hard look at all the algebra that is needed to tackle even the toughest of questions, from collecting like terms and solving linear simultaneous equations, to inequalities and solving quadratics by factorisation.

Day 3: Session 1
The techniques that I need!

This session will provide an overview of as many different examination techniques that can be discussed in the time available, from using a highlighter to remembering to cross out working that is not to be considered.

Day 3: Session 2
All you ever wanted to know about graphs!

This session will look at linear and quadratic graphs. It will cover both sketching and drawing graphs, along with any necessary interpretation.

Day 4: Session 1
A challenging topic!

This session will look a more challenging topic: Pythagoras’ theorem, seeing how important an understanding of algebra is to achieve full marks in a question. The session will also touch upon exact trigonometric values.

Day 4: Session 2
Geometry and the ability to reason!

This session will look at the many facets of geometry, from understanding important angle theorems and properties of shape, to bearings and transformations. The importance of being able to provide geometrical reasoning will also be covered.

Day 5: Sessions 1 and 2
Saving the best till last!

These last two sessions will cover challenging multi-topic questions and others at the end of the papers. Due to the nature of such questions, many different topics are likely to be covered, including those already looked at in previous sessions.

There will be a crossover of content between sessions.

All sessions will be supported by appropriate examination questions and the formulae sheet, if necessary.

Between sessions there will be opportunity for email-supported tasks**, e.g. students provided with examination questions and their associated mark schemes.
** only parent/carer email addresses will be used for communication purposes.

Outline of content – Edexcel Specification

Day 1: Session 1
Fundamental skills and knowledge, without the aid of a calculator!

This session will look at important knowledge from Number, from the four operations and fractions, to standard form and surds, along with changing recurring decimals into fractions.

Day 1: Session 2
Can you apply ratio and proportion to real life?

This session will look at the importance of ratio and proportion, applying them to real-life contexts and other situations, including inverse proportion and percentages.

Day 2: Sessions 1 and 2
All things algebraic!

These sessions will take a long, hard look at all the algebra that is needed to tackle even the toughest of questions, from algebraic fractions and solving linear equations, to linear/quadratic inequalities and solving quadratics by using the formula.

Day 3: Session 1
The techniques that I need!

This session will provide an overview of as many different examination techniques that can be discussed in the time available, from using a highlighter to remembering to cross out working that is not to be considered.

Day 3: Session 2
All you ever wanted to know about graphs!

This session will look at linear and quadratic graphs, along with the graphs of parallel and perpendicular lines. It will cover both sketching and drawing graphs, along with any necessary application and interpretation.

Day 4: Session 1
Challenging topic
s!

This session will look at Pythagoras’ theorem, trigonometric ratios (including their graphs), sine rule, cosine rule and 3-D trigonometry, seeing how important an understanding of algebra is to achieve full marks in a question.

Day 4: Session 2
Geometry and the ability to reason!

This session will look at the many facets of geometry, from understanding important circle theorems and properties of shape, to similarity and transformations. The importance of being able to provide geometrical reasoning will also be covered.

Day 5: Sessions 1 and 2
Saving the best till last!

These last two sessions will cover challenging multi-topic questions and others in unfamiliar contexts.

Teaching and learning styles

All sessions will use a combination of individual and group work tasks, including the use of breakout rooms. Active learning and critical thinking/higher order thinking teaching techniques will be employed. For example, open questioning and times of reflection.

Class sizes

All classes have a maximum class size of 6 students.

Ascertaining student mathematical ability

After a booking has been received, written information will be requested so that a student’s mathematical ability can be ascertained.

Software delivery

All sessions will be delivered using Zoom.

Booking**
